What the Rogers family has been up to
Now that we’re getting back into our homeschooling groove after Baby, opportunities abound! Wow, I’m exhausted.  Was your Christmas season hectic, too? We ended up packing, moving, and beginning to unpack through the holidays, and I invited my lonely dad to come spend a few weeks with us during that same time.  Lots of activity and adjustments, and stress.  Not to mention the baby decided to constantly test the acoustics of our new bare tile floors, and the limits of our hearing! I’m so excited to be able to leave it all behind for a few hours and be refreshed...
Free tickets to Handels Messiah at GCU Phoenix Dec 8: Symphony anyone?
The Christmas season is a great time for revisiting time-honored favorites in the musical world. Handel’s Messiah is perhaps the most performed and most sought musical production of the season. Homeschoolers and friends and the… Read full article at Holly Craw’s Examiner page...
The Mill At Crown King
By Becky Ogden Last weekend, we went with Boy Scout Troop 461 to the outskirts of Crown King so that the boys could do some mistletoe picking.  Outskirts actually makes it sound bigger than it really is.  We’re talking well (26 miles!) off the beaten path nearest paved road here.  Once we turned off the I-17, I found out why Mapquest says it takes 90 minutes to get there! After the mistletoe picking, apparently the tradition has been to head over to The Mill in Crown King.  It is aptly named… Yup, that’s in the dining room!  The restaurant has...
Boyce Thompson Arboretum
By Becky Ogden Ohmygosh, need I say more?  Let’s just put it this way, the only thing I didn’t like about the Boyce Thompson Arboretum was the drive out there.  From Peoria, it was 79 miles or something like that.  Nonetheless, it’s been on my list of places to go for a few years and now that my littlest doesn’t scream for the entire duration of every single car ride she goes on, I was ready for the trip. The view when we got there…. Just inside the Arboretum, heading down the Main Trail… First stop was a sign that gives...
Lake Pleasant
By Becky Ogden Lake Pleasant is the crown jewel of the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation department.  In addition to the lake and all of the activities that water affords, the park also has a Visitor’s Center, the Desert Outdoor Center, lots of hiking trails, and holds a variety of classes and special events throughout the year.  Even though we’ve been in Peoria for almost four years, we’ve only been up to Lake Pleasant a few times, and we’ve never been to the Visitor’s Center. My son needed to find ten pieces evidence of wildlife to satisfy a requirement for...
The Musical Instruments Museum
By Becky Ogden I haven’t been as pleasantly surprised by the quality of the field trip and by how much I enjoyed a field trip at the Musical Instrument Museum since last winter’s trip to the Japanese Gardens in Phoenix.  Yes, I’d heard some rave reviews of the MIM from other people.  I just still wasn’t quite sure what to expect, and let me tell you: my expectations were blown away.  This museum was awesome. Our group met in the lobby, where they had a piano.  Right away, the music is there.  My daughter and her friend couldn’t resist playing...

Pratt’s Pets
By Becky Ogden On our way to Pratt’s Pets, my 9-year-old asked me if there would be kitties and dogs.  We were going to a pet store, so I said that there undoubtedly would be kitties and dogs.  I’ve never in my life been to a pet store that didn’t have cats and dogs…until we got to Pratt’s Pets in Glendale. It seems as though Pratt’s has nearly every pet imaginable, except for cats and dogs.  They have their mascot, a rooster, that roams freely around the store.  They have bunnies, gerbils, snakes, frogs, chicks, exotic birds, geese, ducks, tortoises,...

Just Field Trips beginning plans for 2011-2012 AZ events
from Becky Ogden of Just Field Trips: Welcome to Just Field Trips!  My name is Becky Ogden.  I live in Peoria, and homeschool my 12 and 9-year-olds.  I also have a 2-year-old.  I am the creator of JFT.  I started JFT because I wanted to be able to include friends from all over the Valley in field trips I planned, rather than being limited to one group.  I’ve opened the group up to any homeschooler (who is actively homeschooling at least one school-aged, K-12, child) in the Valley because I believe that the more members we have, the more fun...
