Rylie Hudson, Gymnast
By Becky Ogden As I was getting ready to write this post, all sorts of really lame, cheesy titles came to mind – “Unparalleled Excellence”, something about “vaulting into success”, you get the picture…I dismissed them all (I still don’t have a title yet!) because I didn’t want anything lame or cheesy detracting from this feature on homeschooled, competitive gymnast Rylie Hudson.  Rylie works hard, in and out of the gym.  Like other homeschooled kids I am planning to or hoping to profile, I want to celebrate her achievements.  So, with no lame or cheesy title, meet Rylie, who would...
Elevate Martial Arts
By Becky Ogden Martial Arts are a family affair for the Ruiz family, homeschoolers in Chandler.  “We began training 11 years ago in Mesa under Sensei Daniel Spalding,” Marcus recalls.   “We actually got my daughter enrolled and I began to train with her when my work schedule would allow. When our boys got old enough ( 4 & 6), I continued my training.”  They now have three Black Belts in their family. The Ruiz family’s love affair with Martial Arts doesn’t stop there, though.  As owners of the Gilbert-based Elevate Martial Arts, Marcus and Vanesa have gone one step further...

Te-bow! Te-bow! Te-bow!
I’m loving all the Tim Tebow buzz. This Christian, homeschooled star athlete has singlehandedly caused me to enjoy football for the first time in my life.  =O) (If you haven’t read it yet, check out the biography of Tim Tebow over at Knowledge House/Famous Homeschoolers.  Love it!)   Here was an article I liked over at ESPN: Keown: Enter Tim Tebow espn.go.com The decision to make Tim Tebow the Broncos’ starter was met by cries of Finally! by his ardent supporters. But the question remains: Was this just about football, or was it something bigger? ESPN The Magazine’s Tim Keown...
The History of Candy Corn
From Beverly Hernandez at About.com: October 30th is National Candy Corn Day! Candy corn has always been a favorite of mine. As I was munching on some candy corn a few years back, I decided to find out the history of candy corn. The history is more interesting than you might imagine. Now that I know what I know, I order my candy corn from the originators, the Goelitz family. Print this history and worksheet for a sweet homeschool study. Do a taste test, see if you can tell the difference in the brands. Try some of the recipes by...
Homeschooling featured in AFA Journal ‘college choices’ article
Christians have college choices   by Rusty Benson, AFA Journal   For nearly two years, Ellen and her parents had been planning her educational future. In the spring of 2010, as she approached the end of her final semester in high school, the plan for the fall was to attend Summit Semester (www.summit.org/institutes/semester) at Summit Ministries in Manitou Springs, Colorado. The three-month “gap” session helps prepare young Christians for the challenges of college life. After that, Ellen, a homeschooler, would likely take advantage of scholarships that had been offered at one of several colleges where she had been accepted....
Should You Send Your Kids to College?
Dear HomeschoolNewsNetwork.com Readers: I’m Nathan Jurewicz, a young entrepreneur who was home schooled and never went to college. I went on to start several successful businesses online and in real estate. I have a question for you. I know, this is a controversial question–one I’d like to answer in a FREE online class I’m offering to home schoolers. Sign up for the FREE TRAINING CLASS. After all….. Managing Your Homeschool Schedule
Managing Your Homeschool Schedule by Susan A. Howard Many times over my ten years as a home educator, I tearfully swore I would quit.  I wasn’t organized enough, I wasn’t educated enough, I wasn’t accountable enough and I was chronically exhausted.  At the very beginning of my homeschool “career” I read a horrible homeschool preparation guide that warned me of the rigors of homeschooling and my own potential inadequacies.  Consequently, I feared that I would destroy my children’s future, and the only thing that mitigated that fear was the recognition that my own education contributed less to my competence and success as an...
