Rockin’ Rock Cycle

See what happens to rocks when they are exposed to different geological events!  Identify rocks by their physical and/or chemical characteristics. Learn how to create beautiful crystals at home, and take home samples of Arizona rocks.

Ahoy there Matey!

Yo ho ho, it’s a pirate’s life for me.  Dress like a pirate and hop aboard as we explore the science and technology of pirates who traversed the seas.  Learn about tying knots, navigation and how pirate ships were affected by ocean currents.

Grandmother’s Smile

Have you ever been told that you have your dad’s eyes, your mom’s nose or your grandmother’s smile?  Join us to learn how we acquire those traits.  Chart your characteristics and compare yourself to other students in class.

 

 

December 13, 14: 1:00-2:30 p.m.

December 15, 16: 10:00-11:30 a.m.

Cow Eyeball Dissection (Extra $5 charge for each attendee)

If you missed this class last year, you have another chance to study a cow’s eyeball inside and out to see how it compares to your eye.  Learn to identify each part of the eye and its function.  See for yourself why your pets’ eyes glow in the dark.

Energy on the Move

What is Energy?  How do we know it is there if we can’t see it?  Can we touch it?  Explore potential and kinetic energy through hands-on experiences that not only teach us what energy is but how we use it and how we can make it work for us.

 

January 25  10:00-11:30 a.m.

Sea Star Dissection  (Extra charge of $5 per child.) Limited to 20 participants ages 7 and up.

Do you ever wonder how a sea star takes in food or how it moves about?   Get up close in this dissection lab with a partner to find the answers to these questions and learn much more about this echinoderm.

 

February 7, 8, 10 10:00-11:30 a.m.

February 14, 15, 16  1:00-2:30 p.m.

I See and I Hear

How does your eye take a picture and send it to your brain?  What are sound waves and why do some things sound so loud?  Come explore how your eyes and ears work while investigating instruments and optical illusions to see if you can see what other’s do.  Strengthen your super power skills while gaining a better appreciation for how your body is made.

 

 

February 22  10:00-11:30 a.m.

Squid Dissection  (Extra charge of $5 per child.)  . Limited to 20 participants ages 7 and up.

Which carnivore has a large head, eight sucker-bearing arms and can shoot out a cloud of dark ink when being pursued?  Come and learn about squids while you dissect one with a partner.

 

 

March 6, 7: 1:00-2:30 p.m.

March 8, 9: 10:00-11:30 a.m.

Beautiful Butterflies (Extra charge of $5 per family.  Registration closes on February 10)

Here is another class favorite so sign up early to save your spot.  Take home larvae to experience the wonder of butterfly metamorphosis. But first, you make your own butterfly habitat and learn about the life cycle of the Painted Lady Butterfly.  Once the cycle is complete, release your Painted Ladies into your yard.

 

March 28  10:00-11:30 a.m.

Frog Dissection  (Extra charge of $5 per child.)  . Limited to 20 participants ages 7 and up.

No need to worry, you won’t get warts from this class.  Locate the nictitating membrane and its two sets of teeth.  How does the frog’s tongue differ from your tongue?  Learn  answers to these and other questions as you dissect your frog with your partner.

 

 

April 10, 11, 13 10:00-11:30 a.m.

April 17, 18, 19 1:00-2:30 p.m.

What will happen if…

Do you enjoy conducting experiments?  Do you know how to test variables?  Become a scientist and use a method of inquiry that even the smartest scientists use.  You will learn how to manipulate your investigation to find how to make toys work better and how to surprise even your mom and dad with challenges you can try at home.

 

 

May 1, 2, 4 10:00-11:30 a.m.

May 8, 9, 10 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Chem-Mysteries

Do you love making mixtures, baking or exploding volcanoes?  Chemistry is the science of matter and their reactions when combined or manipulated.  Come test various elements and discover if you can change an element by heating it up or mixing it with another element.  Get your goggles on and be ready for lots of scientific FUN!
